i dont know where to ask questions about broadband n dsl....so if you can redirect me or help!
Is it possible to run say SBC Yahoo dsl without loading their software? They sent a cd with the service and since installing it my system has been blue screening all the time. Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance!

Absolutely. Usually the CD that comes from the ISP is full of ads, cute little applets, and nothing much that you need.

Broadband needs a NIC card, a modem, and an account with an ISP. Nothing more. Well, a telephone line or cable would help.

With DSL you still gotta connect though. So you need either an PPOE or Winpoet connection. Most DSL services use PPOE these days and XP will allow you to setup a PPOE connection in the network setup.

The smartest thing to do is to get a router though that has a built in firewall. You will have a layer of protection and you can setup the router with your DSL username and password so it will always remain connected.

That's what I'm telling you. Go to Network Connections (Control Panel), New Connection Wizard, and do it yourself. This is assuming you're not using a router and have never set up a new connection for broadband on this machine before. Even if all that were not true, you still don't need the crapola, but the answer may be somewhat different.

Interesting that you're back after all the noise in between.
