Comment:
When I try to arrange my desktop icons by name I get at least two A-Z sequences. What icon "Name" is used and how do I get a single sequence?

If you Uncheck everything beside 'Arrange Icons By' - except 'Show Desktop Icons' - then you can move them around how you wish with the Left Mouse Button

Does this mean I have to manually place my icons when I add a new one? Can the process not be automated?

Yes - it can be automated - Arrange Icons By - however you wish - Check one - or Auto Arrange - or do it yourself as described above

Dexter, You can download layout.zip for Free at the link below.
After you have downloaded the file, extract its contents into a folder. Open the folder and double click LAYOUT.REG to merge the information into your registry. Now copy the library LAYOUT.DLL to your Windows\System32 directory. To save your current desktop icon layout, right click on the Recycle Bin or My Computer on your desktop and select Save Desktop Icon Layout. To restore your previous desktop icon layout, right click the Recycle Bin or My Computer and select Restore Desktop Icon Layout.
It works well with Windows XP and you may want to try it.
