Starting today a lot of my programs have been closing by themselves. Everything was fine yesterday so I'm not sure what's wrong. At first it was just when I went to open/save a file in IE, but now programs like real player and Soulseek have been closing out of nowhere. Sometimes it gives me an error (we're sorry for any inconvenience) and sends an error report, but most of the time it doesn't.
I've run Adaware and deleted any spyware as well as did a virus check on Norton. I even did system restore still to no avail.
Any ideas? heelpp.

Hi,
Did you update Ad-Aware online before using it?
Also, you should run Spybot. It's free and it can be found at http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/new/privacy___security/ad_blockers/spybotsd13.exe)You should also update Spybot before using it. Then use the Immunize option to block spyware/malware and finally check for problems.
In general, Ad-Aware gives very good results, but there are things that it doesn't detect, and whicj are picked up by Spybot, and viceversa.
So, if I were you, I would use run programs on a weekly basis.
For information on how to use Spybot, go to this page on their website and read the Tutorials and FAQ's:

Hi katelyn,
If the programs show an error message every time, then my guess would be some sort of memory-problem. But you say they are just closing without notification, and to me, that feels like a virus at work, so doublecheck the first scan that you did, with some of these free ones:
▫ [on-line] BitDefender Anti-Virus
▫ [on-line] RAV Anti-Virus (AV Security)
▫ [on-line] ActiveScan Anti-Virus (Panda)
▫ [on-line] HouseCall Anti-Virus (Trend Micro)
▫ nod32 Anti-Virus (eset)
▫ Avast! Anti-Virus (Avast)
▫ F-Prot Anti-Virus (F-Secure)
▫ AVG Anti-Virus (Grisoft)And because all the programs that you listed above (IE, real player, SoulSeek) are programs that use an internet-connection, this could still be some sort of spyware or security-exploit at work. Don't forget to update these first before you try zapping the baddies. Spybot and SpywareBlaster(=will block them) should have a go.
▫ Spybot Search & Destroy (Safer Networking)
▫ Ad-aware (Lavasoft)
▫ [blocker] SpywareBlaster (Javacoolsoftware)
▫ [on-line] TrojanScan (GFi)
▫ TDS-3 (DiamondCS)
▫ Pest Patrol
▫ CWShredder (Merijn.org)
Keep in mind that some of them may need to be updated over the web first when started, and before zapping the baddies!
If you don't have a firewall, then enable the one built-into XP (check Help&Support on howto).

Hey guys, thanks for the help. Spybot found some spyware that Adaware didn't, and the BitDefender Anti-Virus online test found a few things that my norton didn't. I'm still having the same problems though.

okay I think I might know what it is. I keep getting this spyware called DSO Exploit, and even though spypot gets rid of it it comes back. How do I get rid of it for good?

About that DSO exploit:
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/104837.html
I'm not convinced that the exploit is the cause of your problems, though. Can you post the complete and exact error message? Not the one with "sorry for the inconvenience", but the one that goes like "blahblah has caused a fatal error in module blahblah, error code xxxxxxxx" (or something similar). You can use the EventViewer to check the error-messages. First clear the error-log for applications, and then try to force the error to appear again. That way it will be easier to find the right error-message in EventViewer:
START>All Programs>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer

Here are some.

Are you connected via America Online?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;194205The solution listed in there only applies to Windows98. But try this:
START>All Programs>Accessories>CommandPrompt
In the CommandPrompt, type this:
sfc /scannow [Press ENTER]
The SystemFileCheck will scan every .dll file to see if it's the right version. You may need to have your XP-CD handy so it can replace faulty ones with their originals. You probably installed some software that has its own custom-built msvcrt.dll but which causes some problems with the faulting applications.
You can also try this:
Search your Windows folder(&subfolders) for msvcrt.dll.
You should find one in the windows\system32 folder, but check if there is one in the windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. That one is a backup that was installed when you downloaded XP ServicePack1. You can copy the backup msvcrt.dll file from the i386 folder to the system32 folder (overwriting the other) - it's possible this will not work though. Restart your computer if it works and try IE again.

Hey,
I tried the scannow option and nothing seems to be wrong. Is it supposed to give you some kind of confirmation message? Because when mine finished it just closed.
Also there is a msvcrt.dll file in system32 but there appears to be no servivepackfiles folder.
I noticed that things seem to close when I open the My Video folder. ie. I go to send a video file to someone on aim or msn and it closes. I open a video file in real player/wmp and it closes. Even if I just open the My Video folder it closes as well. It doesn't do it with My Music or anything. I don't know if that has to do with anything though.
This is really frustrating ..do you think I should just reinstall windows?

EXTRA FIRST:
I stumbled upon a DSOStop program at Wilders.org:
▫ wilders.org / free tools
▫ DSOStop 2 (nsclean.com)
1) sfc not showing a confirmation => probably okay2) the normal msvcrt.dll is in the windows\system32\ folder, so the one you found there is supposed to be the faulty one - I'm not sure it is faulty though.
3) no servicepackfiles folder => that's possible if you installed ServicePack1 without downloading it first. So no problem.
**if there is a thumbs.db file in the "My Videos" folder, then delete that file (it stores the thumbnails from 'thumbnail-view')4) A)
WMP>Tools menu>Options>Privacy page
Press the "Clear History" button and restart WMP
Try opening a video again.4) B)
Copy all the stuff from your "My Videos" folder to a new folder somewhere else. Try if you can use the movies properly from inside that new folder.
If it works, put a shortcut to the new folder in the "My Videos" folder or try to recreate the My Videos folder (I'm not sure which program adds that folder).

Thanks! Creating a new folder seems to work. I wonder what made it faulty in the first place but oh well.
This was such a big hassle, thank you so so much.

Great to see you got it working again !:)
