AOL 'not responding' with AOL 9.0SE

Specs: Windows XP, 4gb
THIS PROBLEM IS MOSTLY WITH AOL BUT IT HAPPENS ON ALL MY PROGRAMS. I have charter broadband, the router/modem combo from charter and windows xp on an HP NOTEBOOK computer. regardless of what i am doing in AOL or any program, be it scrolling down to read a long email, responding to an email, typing a sentence, anything and everything, the top bar with the read, write, mail, community, services, etc. goes solid white and i get 'not responding' at the top of the screen. it will even stop responding in the middle of a sentence that i am typing!!! after waiting for about a minute, i usually end up closing down AOL and re-logging in again or closing the program and re-opening it. this was NEVER a problem on dialup! i have called AOL tech support who does nothing more than clean out the temp internet files and other junk, everything that i have done prior to calling them. they tell me to upgrade to windows VR from the 9.0SE that i am using now, that VR looks like the 9.0SE that i am using now. i know people who are using various other versions of AOL and they all have the same problem so why should i upgrade and still have the same issues??? i have gone through every message board i can find to find a solution but have found nothing. can anyone help with this problem or is AOL beyond all hope? is it a problem with HP netbooks/notebooks?? now i see that this msg board is for windows ME? oh well, i'm going to post it anyway since i'm sure that all have had or have the same issues i'm having!

Very few people use AOL anymore, especially in these forums. Out of curiousity, why do you still use it?

As for your problem, it could be a software issue or a hardware issue. Please post the make/model of your laptop. Which anti-virus program are you running? When's the last time you ran a full (not quick) scan from Safe Mode? Do you know if you have a lot of programs that load at startup?

Disable all of AOL's silly security features and anything else it may have installed that you don't need.
