You are my last resort! 8 months ago we started experiencing connection problems with AOL Broadband. We were disconnected every five minutes after logging in. Despite numerous calls to their tech. support we ended up with many viruses - a particularly troublesome trojan and generally the pc just ground to a hal. Despite over 60 calls to AOL and them suggesting all sorts of tweaking and tinkering the system we had died and we replaced it. Lo and behold, three months later the same symptoms have cropped up - we are being kicked off of AOL Broadband again and again and again. Their tech support have now suggested I go into control panel and uncheck the power management option in the USB Root Hub. This means nothing to me but I have done it. Please can someone tell me if they have any ideas why we are having such problems. This latest option appears to have worked temporarily but I have no faith in them and I am now worried about being infected again. I thought that broadband meant you werent supposed to have connection problems? I also thought that armed with Norton, and now MacAffee that we would be fairly well protected. I have additionally downloaded Adaware and Xoftspy. Have I done something majory wrong?
many thanks for your help.
Diane

I keep hearing ads on the radio in the mornings that AOL is planning to drop broadband service. Could be all the problems they're having is running off thier customer base. I'd be looking in to that...
I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

There Are connection problems with all types of way of connecting to the internet. Broadband, just means the PC is always Online, constant flow of traffic in and out. And the speed is greater.
AOL has always been a last choice in ISP for me. Here in my area, up untill 3 month ago, the only Broadband service we had was AOL, I went with Dial-Up. lucky bellsouth moved into the hood...
AOL gives nothing to thier customer, and cares s--- for them. thier tech support is going to read from a list of "effect" solutions and if those solutions do not work than The Problem is on you, its somewhere in your PC. If you are being kicked from AOL its because AOL is crap.
I'm not sure if AOL will work correctly with OUTSIDE firewalls. but you Need to get a Firewall if you do not already have one. I know Windows XP has one built in, but its worthless. It only blocks the Incoming traffic from what i have read on it. I suggest ZoneLab's ZoneAlarm, Or Sygate Personal Firewall. Just google them to get the download sites. As for an Antivirus, I use Panda AntiVirus Titanium 2005 and it works great.
Try a System Restore back several days before you started having the problems (the second time) Install the FIREWALL, ANTIVIRUS, AD-AWARE, and get SPYBOT Search And Destroy. SpyBot will often find things that Ad-Aware will not, and flip-flop.
AOL is crap. look for other service providers in your area. Bellsouth has a great costomer service, Aswell as Charter (Cable Company)

This reflects the way ALL tech support dept works - HP, Sony, AOL and so on.

Yes but in the case of AOL that is how the operate.
Bellsouth, on the other hand, does not treat thier customers this way. If i have issue with my Internet connection that I can not resolve, And one they can not either, A tech is out at my house the next day (depending on the day of the week)
Not all tech help techs, leave you in the Dark. With the "If the solution is not on my list, then you are funked... because I'm not helping anymore, due to the fact that I do not not anything other than what is on my list" attitude.
