Any way to speed up Win Explorer?

I have a Pentium 2.4GHz with IBM 60Gb, 7200rpm hard drive. Why is it so terribly slow to browse in Win Explorer? It can sometimes take seconds to open a folder. I have a lot of files (of course, big HD, many files) but that shouldn't any reason! Is there any way to speed up browsing in Win Explorer?. Thanks

1. How much memory do you have? 2. Are you formatted with NTFS or Fat32? 3. Have you defragged your drive?

Also you might want to partition the drive that might help and if you are using XP you might to check the box under windows explorer C drive properties then check allow indexing of disk to speed up the disk.

Agree with Dick about the Power Desk program. However, it's from VCOM (used to be from Ontrack), not PowerQuest.

The best way I have found is to set explorer to list instead of details; and also to uncheck the option to view NTFS encrypted files in Explorer:Tools>Folder Options>View>Show Compressed or Encrypted NTFS files in color (uncheck). Hope that helps.
Summary: Useful to check you don't have too much "stuf" running in the background. Regardless, the cheapest/kwikest/easiest way to speed up a give system is to add more RAM... However you appear to have 1Gig ...
