I am looking for alternatives to Norton Anti-Virus. I know there are other reputable programs out there and wanted to ask Computing.Net for advice as to what they are.
I am currently using NAV 2005 and looking towards the furture had heard many bad reviews as to NAV 2006.TIA DJMike

just do a site search....that question has been asked tons of times
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

AVG Free. THis is a great virus protector, its helped me out plenty times where norton couldnt. And its FREE!!! Cant beat free.

Avast which is a free Anti-virus utility.
Very nice and low on resources. Auto-updates a couple times per week.
I used to pay for McAfee for over 5 years and like Avast better. If, in the future, they want the users to pay for it then I will.

Trend Micro PC-cillin is the best Anti Virus thats around now! It have won lots of awards, it has everything that you need to get the maximum security!
I wouldnt recommend you using a free anti virus as they dont come with all the required utilities, and security tools, Trend micro is MUCH MORE BETTER than bloody USELESS Norton, Norton Anti Virus is just a Brand that everyone thinks its good so they go ahead and buy it, NORTON managed to gain its popularity BUT not its Effective virus removal from a very powerful marketing tool which is known as: "Word of Mouth!"
Even Microsoft uses Trend Micro to scan files before attaching them to an email message when using Hotmail. read more about it over here:http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/overview.htm
They also offer a FREE online virus scan with free virus removal if a virus is detected.
Enjoy :-)

The free online scan for Trend Micro is over here with this following link:

Enjoy:-)

when selecting an anti-virus there are two main considerations:
1. ease of use (setup, support, gui, updates)
2. effectiveness (how many viruses it catches)For the second factor, the two names that come up time and time again are Trend Micro PC-cillin, and NOD32. Panda is also often mentioned as effective where other virus scanners aren't.
For number 1, you have to try things out for yourself.
However a universally acknowledged fact is that NOD32 is NOT good at this. it's confusing and obstruse for the average user. (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,978452,00.asp)
Norton is also difficult - odd considering its market share.
McAfee excels at useability. The setup and manageability are superb. however many complain that it's not so good at finding viruses.
Combining both 1 and 2, trend micro is a good bet.
