i have 2 XP home edition systems on 1 hard drive...lately one XP operating system halt after the win logo , without showing the users screen.
i tryed getting into safe mode and booting into last good configuration......without success....any idea how to save the one operating system using another system??????

If you can still boot up the working OS, and if you can access the information on the other computer, then first back up all your files. If you have important stuff.

Have a great day and a merry Christmas!

Are both the installations on the SAME partition? If so I suggest you start fresh.

Read how to repair an xp install. Be sure you follow the web advice not what you read on the screen. You have to go past where you think you need to go.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Can you expand on this rather bizarre statement:"...its little nasty prog sitting there in the boot area and making noise....."???

We don't need "hints", we need forthright info, up to, and including the rationale for this configuration.

Still pulling teeth, is the software you installed a secret?

i tryed recovery console using cd setup...but that didnt fix the problem....

The recovery console has a limited number of usable commands, I don't believe setup is one of them. Try the recover console again. Try fixboot and fixmbr. If that doesn't solve the problem try chkdsk/r. If someone else disagrees with this, speak up. The order could be varied.

If your intent is to restore the OS to original state you skip past the repair console and choose to install WinXP. You will then be given a choice to repair one of the installations or to install in a new directory. Performing this will take you back to when Windows was first installed. You will need to reapply all service packs, updates, etc. and possibly all programs.

If o.p. is getting to the windows logo fixboot or fixmbr won't help cause the boot up process has already went past them.
Check out this page. There are some clues on it. aviv6371 is in a better position than most here because they have dual boot. They can boot to the good XP and check to see if the afd.sys file is in the wrong place indicating malware. If not they can copy the afd.sys from the drivers folder on the good installation to the bad one and then try to boot it up.

domass is right....fixboot and fixmbr didnt helpeddd.....but replacing afd.sys didnt helped either...i need to control the bad os with the good os and i dont know how to do this without msconfig and repair console ( didnt helped).
i tryed to repair by the xp home edition cd..the problem is that the bad os has sp1 and the good one has sp2....and i got this message that keeps telling me that the present os is newer than the os i want to install, therefore i cant make the repair for the bad os.......any idea how to deal with the problemmmm would be appreciatedddd!!!
