I have a program called "wfet" (or maybe "mfet") installed on my computer. When my computer starts up, it attempts to connect to the internet with a UPC barcode icon. Then, after I click "cancel," an error message pops up that reads "File Open Error!" with a titlebar reading "FYI."
Later, when I go to shut down the computer, I get a dialog box that says "Waiting for program to shut down" or something, and I can either click "End now" or wait for the progress bar to go to the end. After the program ends, the computer shuts down normally.
I have Norton AntiVirus 2002, with the latest virus definitions, and it doesn't seem to help.
Can anybody give me a tip?
Thanks a lot.

If you haven't all ready done so - you should download Adaware - update it - run it and remove everything it tells you to remove. You can download it from www.lavasoft.com or many other sites. You should also download Spybot search and destroy and do the same. You can download this from www.pcworld.com downloads section.

My neighbor has the same program and we can not find in the the running programs, norw with an email scan. This is a real nuisance, because it stops the system from rebooting or shutting down untill you try to end it.

I am pretty sure the program that is doing this is called "updatestats.exe" on the system i was working on it was in the "program files\media\media" directory.
something called statbalster. i dont know what it does but im going to submit it to the spybot people and see if they can get a patch for it.

Good Job Crunchy Gremlin!! The icon is definately the same... I wonder what would happen if I just delete the "program files\media\media\" directory... Oddly enough, statblaster leads to a fantasy baseball site. If you run some other programs, however, it soon turns out to be a virus. Norton Antivirus caught it as I ran "updatestats." Thanks Crunchy Gremlin for reporting it to Spybot.

Actually i killed the running updatestats process and then moved the folder to the desktop.
Rebooted and got no errors.
I was running win2k but i guess if your running 9x you could boot into safe mode and move the folder.
I assume there are a few registry entries floating around but hopefull spybot will include it as malware and remove them.
Still, looking through spybots forums indicates that they know about the program so it is possible they may not be able to do anything with it if it's not in fact spyware.
I wish they would though as this statblaster is one sneaky piece of bad code.
Honestly im glad i found how to kill it and i hope that anyone else that falls victim to this poorly coded piece of trash finds this information because I looked everywhere and found nothing but this site.
Glad i could i help and I hope that stablaster goes out of buisness real soon.
