Every 4-5 seconds my whole system pauses for a fraction of a second, only noticeable when moving the mouse around - you see it pause briefly, holding down any key in a writing program - it stops briefly, and the most annoying thing in films/videos/any moving pictures like that.

I havent installed anyting or done anything recently, it just started a couple of days ago. Ive looked in task manager, nothing unusual in there and I'm free of viruses and spyware.

Google Startup Control. Download and install it. It runs from the Control Panel and does what msconfig does, only it does it better . Use it to check what all is running on bootup. This sounds to me like a process running in the background and Control Panel may be what you need to help you find out what the process (app) is and prevent it from running anymore.

Havent tried that yet, will tomorrow though.

Actually one thing I just noticed in task manager, just as it lags (or briefly after), the 'System' item jumps up from 0% to 19%, then back down to 0 again...

OK, looking more into the system process, at each pause the thread 'ntoskrnl.exe!KeWaitForMultipleObjects+0x198' spikes up to about 16%, it's clear that this is the problem cause. Any ideas what this does, or why it could keep lagging?
