I have suddenly acquired an ams.exe file and a p2p networking icon in my control panel, ams.exe file is now taking a lot of resources, any ideas what this file is, have panda active scanned and norton scanned, virus free thankfully, any info greatly appreciated

Jim,
this looks like a spyware program.
boot your computer into safe mode, un-install the peer-to-peer program.

download and install adaware to check and remove anybackdoor, spyware programs that may be present on your computer.
