I am trying to help a friend with his computer and am stumped. When he powers up the computer, It turns on, but nothing comes up on the screen. The power lights and cdrom drive lights come on, but then nothing else. At this point it restarts and continues to do so in a loop. The Motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X with a AMD XP2000 processor. If anyone has any ideas about what the problem is, help is much appreciated. Thanks

This is really might be a hardware issue.

Might try looking at bios and see if you can get to it and see if things are correct like date and system specs.

Might try a boot floppy or a live CD like knoppix to see if it boots.

Most normal starts do a quick test on power and memory and boot devices. I almost suspect that you are not getting that far in the boot up "power on start up test."

Might have to get some floppy or CD based diags is they can be booted. Otherwise without factory breadboard tests you might not be able to find out. Things like reseat memory and remove all pci cards and reseat and reduce ram are all starting places if you can't get to bios.

For hardware problems you take everything out that is not needed.

You only need

1) only 1 stick of memory
2) card that monitor plugs into
3) harddrive
4) keyboard
5) mouse

Now start the computer.
Check out the functionally of the computer for what you have installed. If it works ok then shut down and add one more piece then start up and test again.
You keep doing this until you have a failure then you investigate the failed item.

Ok got the procedure.
