I've had this computer since July 2004. I can't quite put my finger on what's causing it to not recognize disks inserted into the DVD-rom drive. If I reboot first, it sees the disk promptly. If I have been booted up awhile (like 30 minutes)it will not recognize a disk inserted into the DVD-rom drive.
I have changed out the memory twice (1 gig DDR 3200) to see if that was what was causing this problem. I've had several computers in my life time, but none have ever acted like this one does. It also becomes sluggish sometimes until I reboot the computer.
Could it be a moterboard problem causing this?

before you go spending lots of cash, try a new ide cable, after a while the 80 cables do seem to degrade, especially if you have moved them a couple of times.
you should also update the bios on that board, to support the amd 2800 correctly.
i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

Take a look at what is running in the background as you should not have 500mb of physical memory being used to get that report on your specs
