Comment:

Is there a good program out there that allows me to create and edit word documents? There has to be some freeware software that works good.
I tried openoffice.org but the webpage has nothing but a prompt to login. I need something that is compatible with MS office programs.

What do y'all use? I'm sick of being a poor student and getting asked to pay for software after buying super expensive books.

If you want to download a split version of OOo instead of the 63.5 mb version, go here and follow the links for win32...

You might also try Abiword... uses a proprietary format of it's own, but is capable of opening and saving Word files...

Oh, and it's free and sourcecode is available too...
