I tried naming a file and now all of my desktop icons have the exact same name. I tried a system restore and cntl z. I'm not that computer smart..but does anyone have any ideas at all about what I could do to get my files back to what they used to be called?? I'm so sorry that I cant provide any more information. Thankyou for reading. If anyoen answers...could I have a step by step walkthrough as Im pretty computer illiterate compared to people on here. Thanks again.

I don't see how you could even get where you say you are on purpose let alone by mistake ! you can't have two instance's of the same EXACT named file in the same folder (i.e. the desktop)soooo.....
any way how did you get it and do the icon's still open the proper programs and files ... if so then work with one at a time and
right click the icon
select properties
find target and right click the target icon
send to desktop (only a shortcut will be created and that will be on the desktop)
then delete the bad icon and move on to the next oneDo yourself a favour and go slowly so as to not get in any deeper!!!

Thankyou so much for yuor help. I really appreciate it....I cant figue out if it works at this moment since i'm not on that compter now. As to how it happenned, I was creating a desktop file..naming it..my screen flashed blue and then they all had the same name. (sigh)

by the way..yes all of the icons still open and work...they dont have the EXACt same name..they have the same name and a different number atached to each on eof them.

WHY would you even suggest this!
He made no mention of the icons not taking him to the right places!"right click the icon
select properties
find target and right click the target icon
send to desktop (only a shortcut will be created and that will be on the desktop)
then delete the bad icon and move on to the next one....."I tried that out and it does not work as you say for a lot of icons, or the icon is not the one on the desktop!
pingu13:
If the icons themselves are okay, and they take you to the proper places they originally did, you DO NOT need to do what IamBiGePaNtS suggested.
All you need to do is:
RIGHT click the icon (not the normal left click)
a menu will pop up
select RENAME
the icon name will be highlighted
press the Backspace key to delete the whole existing name
Type what you want to under the icon.
Click outside the box you typed in to save the name.If you are not sure what to name them, click on the icon to see where it takes you.
You can always correct them to what they say on other peoples desktops later.

Easy now ...
First he made no statement that the icon's where correct and still opened the proper program's and filessecondly if the shortcut's (Icon's)where created by window's then they where not a shortcut to a shortcut (as you would have if you created a shortcut incorrectly)when you find the target it will not only open the folder with the original icon but also select it for you there by simplifying the task of locating it
Third to rename you would only have to click once on the icon then hit F2 then type the name you want it to read but I assumed he wasn't as good with computers as some others are so the easiest way is to create a whole new icon
Yes simply renaming the files and icon's would be simpiler if you have all day to open and close programs and files determining what they are and do and then remembering just what they are called ( I Don't )

"First he made no statement that the icon's where correct and still opened the proper program's and files"
Before he made newer posts, yes, true, but why would you assume he needed to remake his icons - and that is a little confusing for a newbie.

I have no idea what icons he had on his desktop, but if he;s like most newbies he hasn't got much there more than defaults, and some of those do not work well with your suggested method.
"Third to rename you would only have to click once on the icon then hit F2 then type the name you want it to read but I assumed he wasn't as good with computers as some others are so the easiest way is to create a whole new icon"
Yes, that's another way of doing it, but he's more likely to remember to right click and almost always see a list to choose something from if he doesn't remember how to do something in future than he is to remember a F2 shortcut for one specific thing.
"Yes simply renaming the files and icon's would be simpiler if you have all day to open and close programs and files determining what they are and do and then remembering just what they are called ( I Don't )"
Gimme a break. He probably hasn't got many icons to rename.
Newbies need simpler, not more complicated.
