Hello. I have a pretty big problem with my computer. This is a recently built custom computer, and I am having a problem with downloads. Everything I download seems to be corrupted! This includes .exe's, zips, rars, you name it. With exe's the install runs, but encounters a problem saying that some of the files inside the installer is corrupt, and aborts. Zips and rar's dont extract because of CRC errors. Hell, I spent an hour trying to install Java because the streaming downloads keep failing. This computer is built out of the box by a friend of mine, and he has no clue whatsoever as well.

There are no viruses, spyware, trojans, etc on my computer. I have also installed minimal programs. I even went to trend micro's online virus scan website and tried to scan with housecall, but guess what, that was corrupt after the streaming download!

It seems this problem only exists when I download large files, but sometimes occur with small files as well. I've used IE, firefox, and download managers to download, and they all yield the same results. I disable all background progs too.

Here are the specs:

AMD 64 Athlon 4000+ San Diego Core
BFG geforce 7800gtx
160GB + 160GB HD Raid setup to form 300GB HD
Sound blaster audigy2 ZS Gamer Limited Edition
Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 DDR 400 SDRAM

I am suspecting it is a memory issue because I guess it cannot calculate checksums correctly? What should I do?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, this problem still here and its driving me insane. I thought it was faulty ram as jubalsams suggested, but I replaced my ram modules with 2 brand new sticks, but the problem still exists. I reinstalled windows, which didn't help either. Now I am suspecting that my brand new hard drives are either malfunctioning, or my raid setup has gone haywire. Or maybe my whole motherboard is defective. I'm totally lost here.

Same problem here! i have a recently custom built pc, and all the downloads are corrupting just as you described. However, it hasnt always done that; just for the last couple of weeks. My hard drives were in my old computer for a good long while, so that leads me to believe that the hard drive isn't the problem. Plus, i can pull from the network with no problem.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice core
XFX Geforce 7800 GT (factory overclocked)
200GB + 80GB 7200rpm Western Digital HDs
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (basic)
2x512mb Corsair ValueSelect PC3200 DDR400

Yeah, now im pretty sure that it was my secondary on-board gigabit port. (i have 2 gigabit ports on my mobo (asus k8n-sli), and each has a different chipset)

it might be the driver, might be my router doesnt get along with that port/chipset, i dont know, but so far my downloads are working with the other port.

I took out a stick of ram, changed the cable, and put in a pci ethernet card, and that fixed my problem, from there i put the ram in, still worked, connected the old cable to the pci etherenet card, no problems, but when i put it back into the onboard port, corrupt downloads again. set up the other port with an ip etc,(i dont use dhcp) and i havent had a corrupt download yet.

Yeah, i swapped in an old 10/100 ethernet card, and voila! no more corrupted downloads. maybe its a driver problem.

Alright, here are my results:

I took another path and opted not to install an ethernet card for the fact that I didn't want to go through the hassle of disabling my onboard lan, and installing another card. Judging from my circumstances and from the friendly emails from the above people, I came to the conclusion that my onboard lan is totally faulty. I tried installing new drivers, but it didnt work. So I decided to plug my cable modem to my computer using a USB cable instead of the usual ethernet cable. Guess what, it worked!! No more corrupt downloads, so far, and Steam actually updates to 100% for once, whereas a couple of hours ago, it wouldn't even go past 30%. So in the end, my onboard networking is broken, even though this is a new motherboard from MSI. Using the USB method solved everything. Switching to an ethernet card would had probably solved my problems too, but I didn't try that.

Thanks all!
