All Microsoft Icons are missing

February 25, 2010 at 06:29:56
Specs: Windows XP
Hello,
Anybody know why ALL my Microsoft icons are replaced by a generic icon?

All the files still work, and when the file is open, it has the correct icon in the top left corner of the window, its just that i no longer have the proper icon on my desktop, start menu, or in windows explorer.

I tried using "open with" and forcing a file to use the proper program. In doing so, i can see the correct icon on the list. But after i apply and get out, its still the generic one.

I have generic icons for:
Active Sync
Excel
PowerPoint
Outlook
Word
Any shortcut to a website

(Internet Explorer has the right icon just not site specific shortcuts)

It’s almost like Windows Explorer is messed up somehow.

pokey302, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the Color Quality from 32 bit to 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and change the Color Quality from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK. This will rebuild the iconcache.db file and may correct your icon problem.

Thank you for the response! I had my fingers crossed while
doing so but unfortunately, it didn't correct the problem.

pokey302, Go into Folder Options>View tab and select Show Hidden Files and Folders, click Apply/OK. Now go into your C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data folder (where Owner is you name), locate the iconcache.db file, right click it and delete it.

See if 'Refresh' does anything.
Right click a blank area of Desktop, then click Refresh

I notice all the Icons will do a blink.

How much RAM memory does your computer have ???
Having too little for XP can cause a loss of some features.
Also ---
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

My Desktop starts up on my Laptop with those Icons, but then
icons pop in with correct Icon.

P4 2.8GHz 1GB Ram.

I haven't had this issue in the past.

History: Recently explorer has just been randomly dumping on me and restarting. (Not the computer restarting, just windows explorer itself) It mostly occurs when im right-clicking on a file or right-clicking inside a window it will make it just stop working and restart. It doesn't do it all the time (maybe once a week or so) Im wondering if that has caused the icons to mess up.

pokey302, Usually the various fixes recommended correct the icon problem. You could go to the link below, scroll down to line 121 (left column)" Increase Icon Cache" and download a vbs file.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

I'm running out of ideas.

Only my account is on the machine besides the admin so not
sure.

I tried downloading a few different icon files and forcing windows to use them for excel files. That didn't even take. They still refuse to show a
picture.

Having done #11 you might have to repeat #1, or even #3 (with several reboots). If there is still no change then it must be something other than iconcache.db not updating sufficiently.

As an aside, the Kelly's Korner fix (#11) gives a 12000 value in the registry, which is massive. This uses extra RAM and I have found that changing it in the registry to the MS Max of 4096 is quite sufficient (MS recommend 2000 and the default without any modification is 500).

If none of the above work, did you install something recently? If so uninstall it and see if that is the culprit.

Lastly you could use system restore and pick a date & time before the issue arose.

some other bloke...
