ALL my computer's folders are set as read-only as well as many of the files.
i cannot change any of these from "read only" i use windows xp professional.
i am the administrator. i have not changed any settings etc. i've restarted the computer several times. tried to "take ownership" of several folders. i'm the only user on this computer. i don't understand why this has even happened let alone what to do please help!

What about trying it in Safe Mode? (F8 before Windows starts to load) Also you might want to run a full updated Antivirus scan
I'd also suggest downloading Free Malwarebytes and running a full updated scan (removing all found Malwares at the end of the scan)

Read Only
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326...
tried the above 2 options, neither has worked please more help is still required!
Well at least you're malware free now Try XP SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pr...
And if you already have that installed, try..
Start > Run > SFC /ScanNow
EDIT:And did you -1 Johnw above?
Because that response has helped many (most) in the same situation
Its not a "bad" answer!
What makes you think the files are read-only? Are you getting errors of some kind? More detail/information would be good. LIR
the reason i think the files are read-only is that(like the folders) when i go into their properties, almost all have "read-only" checked. some don't (music files (mp3 and wma only) and only 3 video files that i can find (all wmv format but other wmv format files are still read-only))
