Comment:

All documents (mostly MS-WORD) have disappeared from the My Documents folder, as has a subfolder named 'newfolder' containing documents. Sounds like a virus, but system runs AVG-Free edition. Does anyone know which virus it could have been? thx

sounds more like they were either deleted of you are in the wrong profile. Do a file search for *.doc and see what it finds

Hello,
Mike is right, it has moved to another folder, how this happens is a mystery and sort of a joke on us. You will find it as a folder within a folder. This has happened to me a few times. You may have to check your folders visually to track it down. One of the wonderful mysteries of windows.

one thing you might check first is to ensure that 'show hidden files' is unchecked in folder options. The files may still be where you thought, just invisible

In case you can't find them, they could be still there, they are only marked as deleted in file name directory. FAT32 used to do this by putting ~ in front of the file name, but all of the information is still there. I'm not sure how NTFS functions. Try not to install anything new, or save any new information, but find some sort of data recovery program and recover your files or examine first sectors of your HDD with some sort of hex editor and change these file names to old file names
Goodluck
