HELP!!!
All of my .exe files have been changed to .ink files. As well, I am unable to download anything the "open with" option is not available. And when starting the computer pressing F10 does not work either.

Quoting Snoopy104:
"For the benefit of others:
When double clicking the xp_exe_fix.reg file, windows asks what to use to open it. Go to select from list, then browse and find C:\Windows\regedit.exe, select it and click ok, then double click xp_exe_fix.reg again and it'll ask you if you want to add the info to the registry. Click yes and reboot your computer. You should notice that by going Start->my computer->C:\ and opening any one of the folders, all of the programs appear normal again and will function correctly."

KevenE: You are not alone ... For info only:
Part way through my Norton 2006 antivirus installation, everything went to .lnk extension, NOTHING will open including my "C", control panel, web explorer, email, etc, etc. My XP boots, my desk top appears however the icons are the generic MS version, not the usual icon. I suspect that it is a virus as it seemed to happen when the Norton install process got to the uninstall 2005.
Everytime I try START>RUN and select a program or file the following appears: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." This occurs even in safe mode.
I have tried the xp_exe_fix.zip and the linkfile_fix.zip and the same meaasage appears, "...no program associated ...".
NOTE!!!
The file contents are still there, and I am in process of copying them to a jump drive. (and cleaning them of course).
I see the only way to fix it is to wipe the HD and re-install.

Tufenuf,
it won't work, because I am unable to download anything. And regedit.exe does not exsist as all exe files don't work. I think we will have to wipe the HD. I was hoping not to do this as I don't have XP on a disk. It came with the computer and I never did copy it.

Tufenuf, thanks but I tried that and I am unable to open or run anything. All I get is "... no program associated ...", frustrating to say the least. The info is there, as I copied some to a jump drive ... however, now I cannot. WHY???? I have succumb to taking it to a repair shop !!!

I also just installed Norton Antivirus 2006 and am having the same problems. I've tried all the threads mentioned above, and still no help. Did xxtinct figure out what happened?
