Dear Gurus,
my desktop link icon( Epson smart panel scanner) had disappeared. I used search and dragged whatI hoped was a new link from the Epson directory to the desktop. But it stayed on the bottom task bar.
I tried all three button combinations to get the Epson Smart Panel link Icon onto the desktop.
Then at some point I found that ALL the icons on the desktop were selected. I tried to run smart panel anyway. The program started but when I pressed preview of a photo in the scanner, I got the out of memory message.I'm not quite sure what is happening .
Help please.
Fred

I haven't a clus as to what you have done! Try to do a system restore to a previos date before you started playing with the icons.

Dear Gurus lurkswithin and Tufenuf:-
problem solved .
Lurkswithin reply also offered a suggestion list of possible related topics.
I looked them up and specifically the problem was solved by the following reply to max00 from tufenuf I quote

max00, It's possible that Active Desktop is enabled. To Disable Active Desktop. Open the Control Panel.
Open Display Properties.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click the Customize Desktop button.
Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
Make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked including My Current Homepage.
Restart your computer.Tufenuf

How this became checked, we'll never know, but unchecking did the trick
Thank you lurkswithin for your restore suggestion which I carried out. This time ( due to my difficulty trying to describe how the icons had been affected)maybe you would have suggested another way other than the system restore which didn't manage to get rid of the strange desktop icon behaviour.
It's a pity we can't append a snapshot of whatever the current problem may be. In these cases a photo is worth a thousand words. But to both of you a 1000 thanks :-))
Bye
Fred
