all desktop icons are suddenly in taskbar

Specs: Windows XP
On XP, desktop icons (large icon size) suddenly copied to the taskbar. This is the center section, to the left of the arrow, to the right of the start menu, to the right of where the quick launch tiny icons would go. Computer running extremely slow, much slower than the usual slow of this 6 year old computer.

If I right click -> delete, it also deletes from the desktop and taskbar gains another desktop icon. I cannot drag icons off taskbar. I restarted in safe mode with no change. I have gone into taskbar properties and restored defaults, which didn't work either. Tried forcing AVG scan, even though it ran during the night (I assume). I'm not seeing any sign that it is running and no report showed up after a few hours of waiting. Task manager is not showing any processes running other than system idle process. No applications running at all. I tried the explorer.exe from run new task and nothing happened (not sure if something was supposed to happen though!) I'm at a loss as to what I should try next.

Again, this happened suddenly and without any conscious request for it to do so. I have no idea if this is a virus type thing or an accidental screwing up of everything.
