Hi,
some help please. Yesterday suddenly my pc slowed up and in the task manager I noticed that alg.exe was increasing in mem usage (by about 2 megs per second). I restarted the computer but after some minutes it did it again.I tried some more times and then finally, instead of rebooting, I disabled it (in services), and reenabled it. Till now (after about 10 hours), it hasn't happened since.
I also scanned my computer with Norton but didn't find anything. My computer is running on Win XP SP2 and alg.exe is needed for the SP2 firewall to work. I'm running the internet behind a hardware firewall as well and I haven't installed anything new on my computer for months (except for the usual servicepacks and av updates). There is no spyware on it as well, there never has been as I frequently scan using Adaware and Spybot and pay huge attention to what I install
Any idea what might be wrong? I fear that if I restart my computer, the same thing might happen again.

Norbert, are you attempting to run two firewalls at the same time? If so, that's likely the problem.
As a general rule, firewalls and AV programs don't play well together and end up conflicting with one another.

Hi,
actually no, my computer is on a network, the router I'm using has hardware firewall activated (athough my computer is in the 'demilitarised' zone). It is running over a network, and has been doing this for over 2 years now, I installed SP2 last November and haven't had any problems until yesterday.I don't know what went wrong, I do recall that the latest thing I've done on the network was to install my shared printer onto another computer, but I've disabled it now as well.
