AIM Lag Problems

Not so much lag, as in bandwidth, but lag as in when I type things into my IMs, AIM pauses as if it's trying to register something..then it suddenly kicks back into action. At any rate, I've noticed that my AIM does this, and I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating, and even downloading a different IM program (Trillian) but even on there..it still does this "lag" thing. Strangely enough, this is infuriating me, as I apparently cannot reason with this program, I am tempted to put an axe through my machine. Please save me before my PC is split in half. Thanks!
