I started up AIM today and connected fine but for some reason nobody on my buddy list appeared online. I see all my buddies under the offline status when I know some are online. I signed on using my other computer and it worked fine but on this computer I can send IMs but cannot see anyone online. When I send the IM I get no confirmation it went through/ When I go to privacy options it is greyed out and after about fifteen seconds I get an error message. "Unknown error. Try again later." I press ok but the problem persists. I have tried uninstalling AIM, scandisk, defrag, special uninstall software to no avail. I am using AIM 5.2.3292 with Windows XP Home Editon. I have a broadband internet connection and a linksys router. If you can help me get this working I would be very greatful.

Thanks,
Max

After an AIM un-install, there are a limited number of files and registry entries left behind. I say this from first-hand experience and someone who's had to re-install AIM more than once. 8-)

One of the files left behind is your buddy list. That can be handy when re-installing but, if it becomes corrupted, it's a problem.

Make sure ALL folders and files associated with AIM are deleted before you re-install. Just as importantly (maybe more so) are useless registry keys left behind from the previous AIM installation.

If AOL is not your ISP, blow out EVERYTHING which has an America Online or AIM name.

Then re-install.

Sincerely, Solarian
