I read articles suggesting it could be the memroy, pwr supply, bios, etc. etc.
I'm trying to fix a presario 3000nx for a friend but it either hangs or restarts when trying to load agp440.sys.
I've tried re-seating, swapping out the memroy from two other computers, swapped the pwr supply, stripped the system from all unecessary peripherals, cards, drive, etc. Yet I get the same thing.
Took the drive and placed it in another working computer, same thing.
So it looks like it's corruption within the O/S but the problem is I can't even get into windows to update the drivers etc. etc.
Sooo.. I setup the drive as a secondary, booted, and found agp.sys.
Found agp440.sys in the system32\drivers folder and replaced it with one half the size in the windows installation foldder. Booted the drive as the primary , still no luck. !!
Prior to all of this I remember windows warnings suggesting I update the video driver but I ignored it one to many times. What should I do now.

boot from a xp cdrom and run a repair installation
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

what video card or onboard video do you have?
put the hdd back in and do a repair in the xp install menu with your xp install disk.
download the video card driver
while its repairing.

I have had this exact error before.
Following on from Matties' suggestion, once you have booted into repair mode run chkdsk /r.
