Hi there. I have a 3 year old MSI motherboard which only supports AGP 4x graphics. Just wondering if I could use a 128mb 8x graphics card (8 pixel pipelines) or would it not work? Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I agree that the speed is always backwards compatable however, the signaling voltage may not be compatable.
A Universal AGP 3.0 card will work as the signaling voltages are either .8V, 1.5V, or 3.3V.
An AGP 3.0 most likely will not as the signaling voltage is .8V.
Post back with the model number of your motherboard.
Do you have a specific video card in mind?
Best Regards, Mesich

Okay, I have an MSI MS-6380 ATX Motherboard which supports AGP 2.0 4x. The cards I have in mind are the ATI Radeon 9500, 9600 or 9700 pro with 128mb. All these are 2x, 4x and 8x compatible but not sure if they're AGP 2.0 or 3.0. Thanks.

djwolf,
Any of those will work with your motherboard as they are Universal AGP 3.0.
