I'm at the end of my rope.
Yesterday, my laptop broke down, so I had to send it back to HP. Now, there's a older, homemade computer in my room, and since I use 56k modem, I decided to just use that older computer... but when I plugged the phone line in and entered my name/password/etc, and clicked Connect, the whole computer froze when saying "Opening Port..." I tried the other jack (there were two on the modem), but no success. I tried uninstalling the modem but I ended up losing the drivers so I had to do a system restore. A check said that the hardware was working properly, but it still crashed whenever I did a "query" or trying to connect. I uninstalled the modem and tried generic drivers, but the COM ports kept being mixed up and it wouldn't detect the modem itself - incorrect COM ports. I decided to use Lalays Everest Home Edition and it said the modem was AT&T LT Modem, even if it said Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem before. I tried installing drivers but it said the hardware wouldn't register. I finally found an older Agere driver that was compatiable w/ XP. Well, it did the exact same thing! (Froze when trying to find the port or whatever.) I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling new ports, to no use. I'm at a total loss and I don't know what to do. Plus, I had CD burning hell on my parent's computer... let's just say I'm in computing hell right now and I'm about to go over the edge.
Thanks for your help!
(PS - I already searched for the drivers, so you don't need to link me to any drivers, but if you had a similar issue before and you know a driver that would work, gladly post it here!)

Did you pull the modem out and run a driver search on the exact model and chipset of that modem?
Another otption would be to try a different modem; a friend may have one lying around collecting dust.

Hi Andy11. Did you try moving the modem to a different pci slot? probably an irq conflict. You can manually change irq settings in device manager, properties.

Did you go to your local computer guy and buy a used 3com or Creative Labs one for $5?
BTW of the two ports on the back, one has a picture of a phone. Do not use that one.

I don't think I would fight with it for long considering what another one would cost. Most builders have a box full becuase no one wants them anymore. It is easy to find a good brand name one with available and up to date drivers.

My maximum connection speed was 31.2 kbps, then I called at my service internet center and they told me that they give the protocol v.90 (that meens 56 kbps). Why can't I have a 56 kbps connection speed?

I have your driver.
That modem is a wierd one but is blisteringly fast. I get 45.2Kb connection rates in bumphucked egypt during monsoon season. From my profiles:
Driver Date: 6/29/2004
Driver Version: 2.1.41.10I think if you install this driver from the Agere website just long enough to get the thing working then do an online Windows XP update Windows will get the correct driver.

Agere 56k modems are the BEST modems made, period...

You can also find some info here.
I believe that our modems, if infact the same, are the sv92p modems.

Also, as I said XP will update it to a fairly recent build...
"XP Service Pack 2 / Windows Update: Driver version 2.1.41.10 has been added to Microsoft's Windows Update site as a critical update (Oct 04)." -www.modemsite.com-
