explorer.exe not loading on startup

I have had some infections, scanned with the Bitdefender 2009 Free Edition, it scanned numerous times, but I can't get it why the explorer.exe still won't load at startup. I have read numerous posts and articles about making sure the correct registry key exists under WINLOGON, I have also copied a clean working explorer.exe from another machine.

No change.

I also noticed that even though I change the default and the preferred logon names in the registry, everytime it just changes back to the undesired one.

I should have said it previously...I am able to run explorer.exe as a new task in Task Manager.

It is not preferred however to do this each time I logon.

Put a shortcut to explorer.exe in the startup folder. Not a true fix but it should work.
