I was looking at a PC that had tons of "Trojan Downloaders", spyware and was getting tons of popups. I cleaned it up and was still getting "Trash" before I added
"Spyblaster", Adaware and 12Ghost. And now, they are having problems opening their e-mail in Outlook Express. I figured it was one of the SW's I added. Has anyone seen the same problem??
Thanks
Rick A.

well here's my 2 cents. my kid installed musicmatch jukebox, and it had world clock, my search bar, all sorts of garbage thats about impossible to get rid of i reformated because xp is so fast. since then no problems and i use no firewall or virus scanning software. never have. i went to a frinedds house and his start menu wouldnt even open and he all the same things and more.
only thing i can say, is theres alot of inexperianced surfers out there that load up their sytems with norton and other crap virus scanners then just go nuts out there downloading anytihng. it doesnt mater what virus protection you use if you open programs willingly to sabatoge your computer.
these people need a real leson in computing, but i doubt you or i have the time or patience. so he's probably opn his own till he wise up. i know this didnt help you problem, but it may help the source of it. hehe

Kmiell: I agree with you.... I couldn't kkep it clean or running, unreal of all the trash that this thing was getting.. You clean it off and it refills...I also got soooo tried of seeing "N-Case", I was ready to down kick it...

First off, dont blame your children, chances are they are for more advanced at what htey are doing then you are, saying this Im only 19 and work for a very large Integrated defense company.
next, the things that you two are talking about is spyware or adware and is very simple to take care of. First off, go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download Ad-aware, its a free program out of sweeden that will clean your computer completely, make sure that you remember to update thereference file. The second thing to do is google search something called CWShredder.exe (provided from Merjin.org) this will remove any trojans your computer may have. The final step is for advanced users only, which i doubt either of you are as one of you geniuses formatted your computer because you had spyware.
The last thing to try is to go to START, RUN, type in MSCONFIG and look up each thing you see and deselecting the bad ones. Also you should clikc on hide all microsoft services, look them up and disable the ones that are abd.
As far as Virus scanning software goes, dont be ignorant, download some, even its free, it will save you drastic time and money in the long run as some virii can harm hardware. I seriously hope you do not have any Financial things saved to your computer or have anything that you dont mind losing.
As far as prevention goes, Microsoft will be releasing its Service Pack 2 soon enough, this comes with a built in pop-up blocker and identifies most spyware to date. The only thing I can suggest in the mean time is the google tool bar ( available at google.com), which is ok at blocking some of the stuff out.

AJ (Mr. Genius)... Thanks for the input, I don't think, I blamed anyone.. If you could read, you would of seen that I have downloaded Ad-aware, they do run Norton and they have "Google" popup blocker, which is not stopping the popups...That's when I downloaded 12ghost... But my original question was Popup blockers and Outlook Express...Thanks for the Input... But you might need to learn how to spell, but I remember when I was 19 too....
Thanks
Rick A.

The best way to avoid adware, spyware and popups is to stay away from the garbage websites that trigger them. Anytime you get a message asking if you want to download something to "enhance you web experience" just say no. Of course some don't ask your permission. As to geting rid of resident ad and spyware, it isn't always as easy as running one of the standard cleaning programs. There are some out there that are just plain mean.
Personally, I haven't had problems on my home computer because I stay away from any site that even hints at being an adware, spyware or popup distributor. If it has "free" anywhere in its description, stay away!

1)You guys need spelling/grammar lessons bad
2)Go to www.download.com and get SpyBot. It's freeware & works!fungifu

Spybot is Definitely not wht its all cracked up to be. It will take care of a few common spyware/malware programs but you also should use it in combination with adaware and cwShredder as AJ said.
I agree with AJ here, you can whine about how much people skrew up your computer and install and download stuff all of the time, but is your whining justified when you allow them to do it by not protecting yourself. Firewalls and antivirus using realtime protection are a MUST HAVE in todays world, and if you dont have them then if you get infected its your fault for not installing them, plain and simople as that.
back to the problem, the mail opening in outlook express. Chances are that most htings dealing with your Outlook express are going to be viruses/worms. A good way to figure out if this is what is happening is to goto McAfee's webwite and download the stinger tool. Regular Antivirus Norton/Symantec or McAfee can be partially disabled by viruses. The stinger tool Removes these types of viruses and gets you back on your feet. Also, run windows updates and antivirus updates. This ought to take care of your problem.

I donot know how many times ive seen a PC that has been infected with viruses like mad because they just wouldnt update, DIALUP IS NOT AN EXCUSE!!!!! most critical updates are under 2-3 meg, and its not like they release them in bursts, its usually once a month or so. The service pack can be very big but also can be sent from microsoft on CD. I have no Sympathy for nonupdaters.
</rant>sry bout the length of the post but it needed to be stated!
