Comment:

I have the same prob as described in the Win 2000 section with searchweb2.com No matter what I do this page always loads above all others and screws up other pages. I run AVG - full version, and SpyBot S&D and I can fix it, but as soon as I reboot it all comes back :(

Hey
These utils might stop it but not exterminate it. You need to open registry and play. Start>Run>Regedit
Search for the name of parasites in question.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
This should be your possible place of search. Just paste the extire application list and I would try and help you out.

CWShredder/BHO Demon may also be of help here. The former 'may' remove it entirely, the latter may at least allow you to disable it.

Also a google search using the pest's name etc as the string may also bring up ways to remove it...

Do yourself a favour and take the time to save your critical data on a cd-r or second hard drive and then reformat your c: drive and reload Windows xp. The casual user usually has a very difficult time trying to eradicate these hijackers. By fiddling the registry you risk making your pc inoperable which will force you into a reload situation, sometimes without the ability to rescue your important data. Worse, you may do something that only wounds your installation of xp without knowing that you have made a mistake, and this crippled version will cause you untold problems in the future.

My experience shows that whenever someone has one of these hijacker problems they probably have several other malicious applications running on their machine as well. The prudent course of action here is to save your data, delete the windows partition, and reload xp.

If you can save your data, then it will take you about 3 hours to reload and then reinstall your applications. Remember to install your anti-virus and firewall first, then go to Windows Update to get all of the security updates installed.

If you can't save your data then you need to go out and invest in a cd-r or usb external hard drive device. The internet is too dangerous a place (hijackers, viruses, trojans, worms, and the like) these days to travel through without all of your critical data safe and sound on a backup device.

Let us know how you do.

Once free of the current pest - or following a re-install as suggested by "borderrose" (and it's not a bad idea at that)) - install/maintain a decent anti-virus util, a firewall (zonealarm being the usual freebie), also AdAware/SpyBot and SpywareBlaster. Maintain/update their respective reference files at least weekly (if not twice weekly) - much as you would a virus util.

just immunize your PC after using spybot

If your car is running good...don't give it a tune-up....same goes for your PC....and when in doubt...try a system restore to the point when the PC ran good...it WORKS!
