OS: XP sp2
CPU/Ram: Celeron 1000MHz, 128MB
Product: Intel / ASSEMBLED
Comment:

I have my WinXP installed on a 2.5GB partition. With time, the System32 folder has grown to 1.3 GB (it started as abt 700-800 MB, if i rmbr correctly), leving very little free space. The biggest component is the DLL cache (~900MB). I check all this with Glary Utilities Disk Analysis util.

Is there any program to tell the source/origin of each file in the System folder? I am sure many of the Dll's belong to software that i may have used & uninstalled way back, leaving the dll's behind.

If it is possible to recognize the source of a file and delete the unwanted ones (erring on the side of caution, while deleting!), it would save me the task of having to repartition and reinstall the OS.

Thanks in advance for comments/suggestions.

Thanks for that quick reply Larry.. But i am a user of CCleaner for more than an year now!(and thats quite a great software)

However, my question is not about registry cleaning... CCleaner does not quite clean out the System32 folder for me.

My question is about identifying the source of dll's/files in the System32 folder, so i may go about deleting the files one by one, only when sure that they do not belong to microsoft system files.

sorry, but it seems kind of goofy to install XP on a 2.5 gig partition to begin with when it requires almost 2 gigs for the original installation and now is close to 3.5 gigs with all the updates and hotfixes and service packs.

I would look to in larging the partition so as to not have to worry about it anymore!

I used to run a program called DLL Show on NT. I'm not sure if it's still available, but you could Google.

I'm in 100% agreement with lurkswithin...what you're doing is goofy. Not only is your primary partition way too small but you're running XP with just 128MB of RAM? There are so many things wrong with that I don't know where to begin. Are you a glutton for punishment? You have no room for a swap file & I'd be wiling to bet you can't run defrag. If you wanna reclaim space, disable System Restore & dump those files.

What you should do is increase the size of your primary partiton...if you have to, get a different HDD. And do yourself a favor, add more RAM.

Thanks to all the repliers so far.
@jam... you are the only one who caught the shocking '128mb RAM'!

How i am coping:
- System restore is off for the past 5 years now
- I maintain 600 MB free on the partition all times. How? By having ALL programs installed in a separate partition (incl MS Office)
- By using Avast as the lightest anti-virus solution available
- I DO defrag regularly (minimum twice a week)
- Will wait for a system crash, and when forced to, THEN will install to a bigger partition
- Not installed SP3, with the conflicitng reviews so far.

Why not a new RAM.. because mine is a SD one, and that unfortunately is twice costlier than the newer DDRAMs.

Just flogging this gig till forced to buy a new one..

@jennifer
'DLL Info' seems like a better bet to me. Though still to use it in full.

Afterthought:
Process Explorer is a utility i have been using for long. But it shows the DLLs being used by a current running application, the OPPOSITE of what i want.

Nothing wrong with that but you need to be reasonable with your setup. I assumed you had your programs on a separate partition (or HDD), but a 2.5GB partition is just too small for the OS. And by keeping it as such, you're forcing yourself to constantly keep an eye on the free space & doing maintenance. If you have the means (i.e., Partition Magic), give yourself some breathing room. And it's better to use FAT32 small partitions.

$10 for 256MB PC100 or PC133 is too costly?

Sorry, forgot to mention, it doesnt install, so unzip the file place the it wherever you choose and create a shortcut to desktop. I've used this for ages and it's never caused a problem.
