I have tried to insert several disks into the drive, but it will not pull any info. off the disk. It keeps on saying to format the disk, but the disk is already formatted. I can not even save anything to the disk from this computer.

Either the drive is failing mechanically or the driver is corrupted. I'd use the device manager to uninstall the drive and let XP find and reinstall it, then test. If that doesn't help you may need to spend $10 for another one.
