Try downloading the current version 6.0.2
Go to Updates from the Help menu in Adobe Reader

And if you want Acrobat to load faster, there's a great little utility that loads only the necessary Acrobat components for the .pdf file being opened. You can download it from here:

Version 6 is notoriously slow to load - though I know that's not exactly your problem. Do you really need version 6? I use version 4 on older PCs and version 5 on newer ones. Never have a minute's bother and have yet to come across a document I can't open... sometimes newer is not better!
