hey guys, i'm having a problem with my system. i wasn able to connect to the internet, and it indicates i'm on the net, but i can't sign on any of my IM softwares and can't broswe too. so basically i'm "not" on the internet while it says i'm on. i called Gateway tech support and they asked me to use Recovery Console. it indicated that i should recover C:/WINNT, and i chose that one, but it asked me for administrator password. I didn't set any password so i went to my administrator account and set an password. so i tried it again and it says my password is invaild. so i don't know what to do right now. Is there another way to recover my system, or does anyone know what's the problem that is causing my internet problem? thanks everyone for helping!

well, i called them and they asked me for recover console. when it reaches that, my computer asked me for administrator password. i don't think i have any administrator password, so i tried all the password i had before but didn't work. Gateway told me to call Microsoft to get my password. so i did it and they told me they can't do it by phone because of security purposes. they told me there is step by step instructions on support.microsoft.com, i did that and changed my administrator password. but when i go to recovery console again, the password is still invaild. this is driving me insane, so please help me out on this one. thx Simon and everyone else for helping!

Try using a blank password ie not type anything in.if that fails you can use Windows.XP.2000.NT.Key reseting software to reset the administrators password.

If you have recovery disks just do a clean install. You will lose some files if you don't back them up though. The recovery disk should be bootable, you might have to go into your BIOS (F2,F10, or DEL when your computer turns on) and set the first boot device to be your CDROM. This should start an install of windows.
