Administrative shares (c$ etc.)

Comment:

In a pure XP pro workgroup environment with Simple File Sharing activated and basic file and printer sharing working fine, I am unable to connect to a remote administrative share c$, even though workgroup, username and password are identical.

(Normal file and printer sharing is working fine.)

Mapping through explorer to \\otherserver\c$, under a different username as in otherserver\username or workgroup\username, brings up two athentication dialogs: first for the "different username" which will succeed, then for "otherserver\guest" which will fail. (no password set for the guest account)

Trying various combinations with NET VIEW returns "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."

Is this inherent to XP's Simple File Sharing, or is something else going on?

Is anyone with a similar setup able to connect to a remote administrative share (like c$) on their network?

Cheers, Nick

Is that the same thing as disabling File and Printer sharing for Microsoft networks?

In W2K, this is:
Control-Panel->Networks and Dialup connections->Local Area Connections (right click)->properties.

Many thanks,

Jeff
