Dear group:

Is there a program other than MP3Gain that will adjust the volume of MP3's so that they are all the same when I play them?

I have noticed that when I play MP3's I have to keep turning the volume up and down depending on if the volume is too high or too low.

Thanks for the help!

wayne

dear wayne.

get foobar 2000

one of the features: replaygain

'Replaygain is the name of a technique invented to achieve the same playback volume of audio files. It specifies the reference level of 89dB and an algorithm to measure the perceived loudness of audio data.'

not only because of this little gimmick it is the best audio player available yet.

MusicMatch also does 'volume leveling'.

foobar2000 sounds pretty neat.

i was a long-time winamp fan myself ... tried earlier versions of musicmatch too. but now these programs are way too bloated, trying to install additiional programs that you may not want, nagging me to buy pro or plus versions. none of this horses--- in foobar2000 (nor will it try to break your ear drums by playing a sound file when you first load it). it doesn't grab the file extensions (wayne has had some troubles with i've seen in an earlier post, when winamp took over his system :-) on default installation.

foobar is either very simple or very comprehensive ... whichever way YOU want it.

the quality if sound is outstanding.

no skinning or visualization, that's why it is so easy on your system resources.

this little program and (a very few others) is the only reason why i still have a windows computer in the house (no Linux version yet :-).

Hi mattie,

I get your msg.

I'm using MM 8 and have it pretty well tamed.

I went through about a dozen versions/hacks or RealPlayer before I got one to behave.

Yeah if it wasn't for Pegasus email and my DOS tools I would have switched to unix ten years ago.

At this point I'm too old and cranky to learn unix shell scripts so maybe there's a Mac in my future. LOL

i'm sick and tired of taming this and silence that. truth is, to silence a windows box you need to pull the friggin' cable.

an operating system made by ppl who put control of the customers above their privacy is not for me!

if you have some 10 meg of free disc space somewhere, take a look at this: http://www.ubuntu.com/

this distribution is prettty 'newbie-friendly', the download is liveCD and installer in one, good old DOSBox is available for linux too, and what ever commands or scripts u need, it's all out there in the forums, copy and paste is no big deal. enjoy :-)

it also makes for a nice rescue cd.

Hi mattie,

Amazing the way great minds think alike.

I asked the tech guy at a wifi hotspot what he uses for an autorization server. Can you guess?

WRT54G, ubuntu & chillispot.

lol ... ty for da flowers.

in fact the good old linksys WRT54G is the router of my choice too for its open souce firmware!

and as for ubuntu, the hardware support is surprinsingly good, latest version runs on every new machine i tried as yet, unless you have some exotic stuff in your box, there should be no problem at all, differnt story are the peripherals, printer scanner, etc.

it comes with a good deal of necessary software pre-installed, like office suite, internet related stuff (firefox, email client and instant messenger), dvd writer, medie players etc. ... the online repository holds about 16000 additional programs, almost everything free or open source. the latest version offers for the first time long term support for 5 years. and when you boot from the cd, it will run from the disc but not make any changes to your system, so you can play around with it and see if you like it.

Hi mattie,

I went to a shop yesterday and they have a WRT54GL. I asked what the difference is and he said the GL is more "linux compatible". Are you aware of this model? [submodel?]

BTW I DLd ubuntu and the MD5 doesn't match.

~sigh~

I'll try it anyway.
