I noticed that my icons for the 4 options in viewing add/remove are missing the text that explains/identifies what each icon is for.
They returned when I re-set my performance options by re-ticking "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" (i.e.; start>control panel>system>advanced>performance (settings)>visual effects) that after previously having ticked the "Adjust for best performance" (in line with my DVGate program's recommended settings).
Not only was the text (identifying the add/remove option icons) restored, but I also noticed that my personal settings for the desktop had reverted to 'Windows XP' as opposed to the 'Classic' that I had set the desktop to.
Now a day later, I once again I find these icons missing the text despite my desktop remaining 'classic' and despite my performance settings remaining 'Let Windows...'
What the heck's going on? Any ideas?

Steve Hopper, maybe this'll help?
"To turn off/on the pop-up balloons in XP:
1. Goto Control Panel
2. Click Folder Options (in the classic view)
3. Click the View tab
4. Unselect/select the Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items option
5. Click OK"

Make me understand this. At the beginning you mention that the text is missing from the Icons, then towards the bottom you say that the Icons are missing. So, which is it, are the icons missing or only the text?

Ed - Thanks for the suggestion. Will try that.
gilloz - I think you misread my post as I did say..
'Now a day later, I once again I find these icons missing THE TEXT'
..but thanks for reading and any kind recommendations towards resolving this matter.

Ed - I tried it, but no joy. Also tried ticking the "Display the contents of system folders" and still no joy.

What happened to the quality of forum contributors here? It used to be the best place for resolving issues and sharing expertise. I resolved the issue myself.
Finally figured out why the add/remove window's 4 option icons were being displayed without their identifying text.
I poked around the display properties windows settings and discovered that for those of us who don't like the Windows XP windows schemes and change them, if one uses either the "Brick" or "Red, White & Blue" color schemes, that the icons in add/remove window lose their labels.
Just my luck in using the Windows, Sony and/or is it simply the "Brick" scheme?
