Adding to the right-click menu

It was suggested that I go to control panel/folder options/file types tab/ and click on the file type whose drop down menu I want to add commands to, which works, except the closest thing displayed for shortcuts is called "shortcut to a document" and uses an icon I haven't seen before. Is this the representative for all shortcuts? Also, does anyone know of a tutorial or anything like that that can help me learn how to write what I want to write (Like explaining how I would write a command that opens the location of the shortcut's target). Thanks.
