Adding second hard drive to XP prob

My computer with XP went down. Cant do anything, keep getting a blue screen. I need to save some of the files on that drive. So I took out the hard drive and put in an old one and loaded XP on that one and it runs fine. When I put the corrupted drive back in as the slave, the damn blue screen comes up and locks it up again. Why is it doing that when it should be booting up to the newly loaded XP that is not corrupted? I just want to boot to the new drive with XP and access the corrupted drive and save my files. Any help appreciated. CHEETAH.

make sure your jumper pins on the back of your hdd are set corectly...eg: your new hdd set to master and the old "corupt" set to slave...it should then boot from the new drive...

Jumpers are correct. Anyway to add the corrupt drive without restarting. I can plug in the corrupt drive once XP is up but then its not seen by XP so I cant access it.

ok then try this... do as you said plug add the drive after the sysym is up (this isnt realy recomended though)..then go start control panel, system, hardware tab, then devise managerthen right click on drives then scan for hardware changes if that doesent recognise the drive try right ckiking and scaning for hardwharee changes on the computer at the very top of the lift..failing that try the add hardware wizzard (also in the control panel)... good luck...

U say that it locks up when you installed the old drive. Have you even checked to see iff the old drive is operational. I had one do that to me and it was just totally DEAD.If so, you are out of luck because nothing can get into those files once the motor is burned out.
