Alright, so I want to increase my RAM, first of all I would like to know what the max amount of RAM is that I can install for my computer. And I'm more of a coding type of guy, and I don't know much about the "physical" aspects of the internal hardware. I don't know if I got to buy a certain kind of memory, like size or shape-wise for my computer. All my information is in the screenshot.

Sorry if I didn't post enough information for you. Just tell me what else you need to know.
Thanks,
-Aanders5

There is no screenshot. Post the make/model of your system or the make/model of your motherboard.

home edition 2005 isn't a Make/Manufacturer. The easiest thing to do is go to www.crucial.com and select your system from the drop-down options. That will give you all the information you need to know.

Okay I'll look at the site right now.

Again, I don't know any of the special terms when it comes to physical hardware stuff, so sorry.

EDIT: I'm really lost on that site now, I don't know what to fill in the fields, I don't see what I have...

There are no special terms when it comes to make/manufacturer. It's right on the computer itself; probably on the bottom, but I see it on your screen shot. Gateway MX7118. http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...

And you're a programmer? :)

Soon-to-be programmer. I'm still in 12th right now, I'm our school's district "student-technician" and I'm taking PHP MYSQL right now. I hope to someday major in Bio-technology/programming. (more in programming though)

About that site, is there any 2GB cards for my laptop?

Apparently not. The Gateway site says that your memory is "Expandable to 2 GB" of PC2700. Good luck finding 2GB sticks though.

Check these two deals on 1GB sticks:

As you are, by your own admission, inexperienced with hardware you had better read up on anti-static precautions before installing new RAM.

Actually, speaking from a hardware technicians point of view, I'd highly recommend you spend the money and take it in to a shop and have them install your RAM.

It's not that it's that complex or hard to do, it's not, it's just that if they screw up and fry your laptop, they buy you a new one.

If you screw up....well, a new laptop costs a whole lot more than what it should cost you to pay a qualified technician to put it in for you.

Also, with regard to the amount of RAM. I didn't check into the spec's of your system but it may be the existing RAM is on the motherboard and you may very well have two available expansion slots. Which is to say, you might have room to add 2 separate RAM chips. Many OEM's either have the RAM a laptop comes with either directly on the mobo, or, they have one or two RAM slots hidden where you can't easily get at them. Then, they have 2 slots that are easily accessible for expanding.

If however yours has the present RAM in one of the easily accessible RAM slots, it can be removed and replaced.

So to sum up, get a qualified technician to have a look for you. It shouldn't cost you more than 30 min's labor for them to open and look and tell you how much RAM you can safely add. Then simply purchase the RAM, take it and the laptop back into the technician and have him put it in and test. Again, this should be about 30 min's labor.
