is it possible to add icon files to the shell32.dll dynamic link library.
also i have downloaded umicons 2.0 which i use on my linux box. i have transfered the directory to my XP box hoping to use them on there, my problem is i cant change the icons to the umicons because the umicons files are .png and windows uses .ico, i tried changing the file extension but it didnt work, so how can i add this icon set to shell32.dll

G'day Tony, for a start you cannot add or modify system .dll's while they are in use. You can make modifications to a copy and reinstall the file(s) via the Dos prompt from a boot disc.
However, Shell32.dll, although it's icons, bitmaps, dialog boxes, menu items and other resources can be changed using a Resource Editor [such as Exescope or Reshacker], adding more to the file, if it let's you, might render it useless. It's a very sensitive file. I know because I've made many modifications to all Shell32.dll files and others from 95 to XP.
You could also download Irfanview to convert .png to .ico and also get Microangelo to make your own icon libraries [.icl] and to change existing icons in .exe,.dll,.cpl,.ocx and .drv files. These programs are easily found on the net.
Hope this helps

thanks alot, i already have reshack.exe, im not much of a programmer tho so i dont really know what im doing when i reverse engineer a binary or dll, thanks for the help, ill try the other apps you suggested
