I searched but didn't see this exact question: I currently have a 40GB,5400rpm HD w/OEM XP Home (sucks). I want to add a 60GB,7200rpm as the new master & put XP Pro on it w/the original 40HD as slave. These go together onto line one w/my CD burner on line two. I've already backed up my data so can afford to wipe the current drive- just would like my tweaks & settings, if possible.

1)is there a way to save my settings from the home version to put onto the XP Pro? I'm on a home network & so could save them elsewhere while doing all this. How does this work?
2)when do I partition the 2nd drive so that I don't run into drive letter problems later -(CDrom letter changes & screws up access to programs)
3)I have an L7VMM mb- fairly new- do I need to bother with the drive manufacturer's setup "layer" or would FDISK & format suffice? Please be explicit & answer for both scenarios?
Thanks for your time & opinions,
Tracy :)

You could try copying parts of your profile over to the Pro drive once it is up and running. You can forsure get your favorites, cookies and email. Your Drive letters can all be changed in disk managment in XP. I dont know what you meen about partitioning so you dont have problems with drive letters. Windows will manage drive letters by itself you dont have to worry about that. Fdisk will do fine however unless you are dual booting stick with NTFS....fdisk will only do FAT. Windows XP setup will format the new drive for you dont bother with Fdisk. Set new drive to master, remove old drive and boot on the XP CD and follow the setup. After XP in istalled add in your old drive as a slave and drag and drop your setting.
