Add or Remove Programs - hangs

Whenever I try to remove an application using Add or Remove Programs, it stops responding at the "Please wait while the list is being poulated" stage. I have left it to wait for ages, but it just stops responding. Sometimes I can close it with Task Manager, but mostly I have to reset the PC.
