It will not work with XP at all and Adaptec does not plan on supporting this card in XP. Following is the response I received from Adaptec when I asked them the same question you are asking.

*******

Greetings from Adaptec,

In response to the "ASK-us mail" you have sent about AHA-2920.

Currently, Adaptec Inc. does not have drivers posted on the web site
for Windows XP. We do not have information as to when the driver will
be available, for the controller in question.

It is unlikely that it will be supported under Windows XP, since
there's not even a Windows 2000 driver. We cannot verify this for sure
at this point.

For compatibility listings from Adaptec, please check:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/supporteditorial.html?prodkey=
Windows_XP_Support

When or if the Adaptec version of the driver will ever be released, it
will be available @:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppdetail.html?prodkey=AHA-29
20

We currently have no beta version of the drivers.

Hope you find this information useful.

I have the same host adapter...and it doesn't work in XP...but it did work in win2k Pro...the driver was on the Win2k CD...however, I don't know how extract that driver off the cd...since Adaptec is of no use whats so ever...I am using NT4 to use my SCSI scanner and zip drive...any ideas to take the driver off the cd?

I'm afraid I have no solution either as I have the same problem.
You got the plain-vanilla 2920 also known as the Future Domain TMC16 (or something) - that's how it always showed under W2Kpro on my system, which is also what Linux installations generally found...

So, where does that leave us!?

Adaptec with their viciously overpriced SCSI adaptors offer probably the worst after sales support of any major hardware supplier. I have never experienced such ignorant and detached support as theirs (well, maybe Microsoft come pretty close ;} but that's software!)

The 2920 is a perfectly adequate SCSI controller and I cannot see any reason for discontinued support!

Anyway I'm babbling - I'm going to look into extracting the drivers from W2K and trying things that way...
I'll keep posted as to how it goes but also ask you if you could feed me with any success with your attempts!

Good luck!
Si

I got mine working!

Assuming you have a Windows 2000 installation disk find the following two files:

in the i386 folder:

fd16_700.sy_
scsi.in_

copy these to a folder

then expand with their respective filenames:

fd16_700.sys
scsi.inf

then goto your device manager and find that nagging exclamation of your 2920's failed entry (will probably refer to Future Domain or similar) and proceed to update the driver MANUALLY pointing the wizard at the location of the above two files - as long as it hooks the scsi.inf (and fd16_700.sys is in the same folder) all should go to plan!

Make sure you have enabled unsigned driver installation...

P.S. It worked for me on my system with an Adaptec 2920 (also known as Future Domain TMC16xx)

The solution above WORKS great...but there a couple extra steps for those who don't know...

Also copy over extract.exe (LOCATED IN THE i386 FOLDER in the Windows 2000 CD) into the folder that already contains the 2 driver files.

THEN...go to START-->(depending on your start menu setting) ALL PROGRAMS-->ACCESSORIES-->COMMAND PROMPT

The command prompt you see should say for example:

C:\Documents and Settings\current folder name

I made a new folder on the desktop and copied all the files into it...but you need to run the EXTRACT utility from THAT folder...

Enter the following at the command prompt (assuming the files are located in a folder on the desktop):

cd desktop (PRESS ENTER)
cd xxxxxxx <--this is the name of the folder that contains the files (PRESS ENTER)

TYPE AT THE PROMPT:

extract FD16_700.sy_ FD16_700.sys (PRESS ENTER)

extract scsi.in_ scsi.inf (PRESS ENTER)

The files are now uncompressed (EXPANDED)...
That being the case, type EXIT at the prompt and the command prompt window will close...

Now follow the remainder of the steps dictated in the procedure above, and the card should install along with any SCSI devices that are attached to the card...it worked for me

If you find what I wrote in the above response to be too much trouble to deal with...

Then click on the following link and download the .zip file...you will need Winzip or equivalent to extract the files into the folder of your choice...

Ahhh it doesn't work for me. I've expanded the files from my Win2000 CD and tried Keith's from his website - neither worked.

I still get the "The INF file is missing a neccessary entry." error message.

In 2000 my card worked fine - listed as "Future Domain PCI SCSI Host Adaptor" or something similar. Any ideas??? I'd hate to have to get a new card.

Make sure that when you are updating the driver that you choose the advanced radio button (not the automatic one) and then choose don't search and choose have disk and browse to the driver's location, choose the inf and then pick "Future Domain PCI SCSI Host Adaptor", it will work.

OK I got it to install but it is NOT entirely stable. In particular My Computer and Windows Explorer are affected. It doesn't lock up or cause crashes though. have to be patient with it.

I was having a heck of a time getting my 2920 installed. I had to really fight XP in order for it to accept the new drivers. I ended up uninstalling the hardware and forcing it to use the above mentioned drivers.
