when viewing pictures in my documents a message appears saying microsoft has detected an error and closes my programme down and i cant view my photographs. The computer closes my documents down and reverts to Active Desktop Recovery - this means i can't view pictures in my documents without my computer closing down

Renge, can't tell you why, but may know a work around. Get free Irfanview @:
http://www.irfanview.com
It's an excellent graphics viewer and simply associate all your pix with it and you should be able to open them. Maybe there's an easier fix, but...

Perhaps this might work:
Clear Thumbnail Cache

Your Thumbnail Cache might be corrupt.
