I have two comps (2 Desktops) at home, each running Win98SE. I am debating whether or not to upgrade to XP, but my biggest hitch is the Activation Key. As far as I can tell, I will have to purchase 2 copies of XP in order to have it on both machines at home because the key only works for one machine. Is this accurate?

Thanx for any info.

Two more things you can do:
Install XP on a lesser computer first, and then call MSFT and tell them that you have upgraded many parts and has to reactivate.
If you don't want to talk to MSFT people, wait for 120 days after the first install, the "key" will be thrown out, and you'll be able to reactivate automatically again.

4 months is a long time to wait but the key will expire as the other person stated after 120 days which will allow you to install it on a 2nd computer, ya then have to wait another 120 days to install on a 3rd computer.

If it only were that easy.
It's not your PC that keeps track of the time; if it was, then there would be no problem putting it on a second PC unless they were in constant communication.
Activation means telling Microsoft the software was purchased legit. The date for expiry is kept with them.

To activate XP on both machines all you have to do is activate it on a one machine, then copy a file called wpa.dbl (somewhere in the windows directory structure) into the same directory on the second machine...
