I have recently got broadband..I not very emm technical but ill try explain it.. The line comes from the box that picks up the signal (on the side of the house) to a router (EDIMAX) and then wireless(Belkin wireless G desktop card) to my computer. It connects ok most of the time , but while I'm surfing the net it suddenly disconnects..When i hover over the icon(on the bottom right) it say Acquiring network address..
Does anyone know how i can fix this problem??? thanks for reading..

Two guesses:
1) When your computer gets a network address from the router, it comes with a time limit. The time limit could have expired. How/If you change that limit varies from router to router.

2) Wireless Zero Configuration (WinXP's wireless network) tries to do a lot to make things simple for the user. It doesn't always do things correctly. The general workaround is to stop/restart the service.

Increase the dhcp lease time would be my guess. My guess would be the router is setup for a short lease time. Your setup may be different.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

I had the same issue on a new install of winxp pro sp2. Fully connected but the icon was still "acquiring". a search found me this solution:
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

then reboot. Problem solved (at least for me)
