Hi guys!

I bought an Acer Aspire 5920 with Windows Vista preinstalled.

I want to install Windows XP Professional SP2 but I can't !!!

I insert the Windows XP CD to install Windows and the Setup program says that "Windows did not find a hard disk"

Maybe it is a controller stuff ? It has SATA Hard Disk Drive on it...

Can you help me please?

Thank you in advance!

Are you pressing F6 when prompted to install the SATA drivers?

I think there may be an option in BIOS that will allow you to change the SATA mode.

The SATA Mode BIOS feature controls the SATA controller's operating mode. There are generally three available modes - IDE, SATA or AHCI and RAID.

When set to IDE, the SATA controller disables its RAID and AHCI functions when the computer boots up.

Hopefully your BIOS has the same options.

I take it you are replacing Vista with XP. Do NOT change the BIOS setting for SATA if you are planning to retain Vista.

One other thing worth noting here is that changing this BIOS feature after installing the OS may cause boot failure. You may be need to reinstall the OS.

It has no such option..
It has a few options about Booting and some devices..but not Controller Function options..

The other possibility is to slipstream your XP CD to include the SATA driver into it.

This thread may help in that direction:

Hope it helps.

My friend.. it's a sad story..

5920 DOES NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS XP PRO.

This is what ACER told me.

There is a hope (in the future) to support it with Windows XP Drivers...but until now..nothing..

sorry.

I found some drivers for the Graphics Card.
They are great and work fine.

Network works.

Only some "network controller" and "PCI Device" doesn't work. I am searching...

Hello there.

The information provided here was a great help.

I am, or should I say, I was, going to buy this notebook.

That are drivers for the graphics card makes hope, and that the network works.

But I have to say, I'm quite unsure.

ultraxmode, how is it going with your Acer at the moment, is everything alright so far?

Any information would be appreciated,
but nonetheless, a big thank you, even
if was just randomly searching, for the
information I just got here.

Greetings and regards,
Kasimir

You're welcome Kasimir.Sure There IS a problem with this laptop. Windows XP cannot be installed fully. I am just saying that there are no drivers for some of the laptop's components. After a research, I found drivers (even modificated) for some of the basic components such as Network Card and Graphics Card.

Sound does not play. Also I'm not so sure that the chipset of the laptop plays 100% right.Even the Wi-Fi card does not play either. My laptop plays right now at 1280x1024 display without a problem.Network also works perfect.

Maybe Acer will think about it again and support 5920 for Windows XP.Acer MUST support it...also for commerce reasons.
We'll see.

Great con for Acer.. Should support Windows XP for this great laptop.

Oh, I also want to tell you, that IF you'll buy this laptop, you must create a slipstream installation CD of Windows XP (containing the SATA Controller's drivers) otherwise installation of Windows XP is forbidden. It cannot recognize the SATA Hard Disk...and... it has no floppy drive (wich make things difficult for you..pressing F6 and load them to the system from a diskette).

I used NLite. You can find it here :

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

and it's free. GREAT TOOL...

You can find SATA Controller's drivers in the Acer site. (Vista Drivers do the job)

Also if you read the upper posts you can find the Graphics Card's drivers link (modificated drivers).

When you install Windows XP, do a Windows update and it will find some additional hardware drivers update.
