Access to PC with XP Hard disk failure

June 16, 2011 at 07:47:34
Specs: Windows 7
I have a Dell Dimension XP machine and on bootup, I get an error 'boot device not found'. I restart with the XP CD to try recovery and in the console I try chkdsk /R but I get 'unrecoverable hard disk error' msg. I have another Win7 machine and I add the XP hardisk to this machine but in the Explorer I cannot see it.

Is there another way of trying to access my data from the Win7 machine?

This is a hardware problem but you posted in the CPU/overclockiing forum.

Is the WinXP hard drive and IDE or SATA type? If IDE, verify you have the cables and jumpers configured correctly.

While the XP hard drive is connected to the Window 7 computer look in Disk Management for the drive.

I tried the Win7 Disk Mgmt and it didn't appear. I'm not sure what type of HD or how to tell. I'll take it out again and look at changing the jumpers. Is it obvious what change from master to slave needs to be made? And I'll recheck the cables again.

The hard drive may have physical or electrical defects that won't allow it to be configured.

Watch the POST screens at start up to see if the drive is being configured by both the model and the full capacity.

As I stated above, IDE drives use a data cable that is over an inch wide, SATA uses a much smaller, oval, usually red, data cable.

Be sure that you have also connected a 12V power connector to the drive. Feel if the drive seems to be spinning up.

To get the data , try a bootable disc like Knoppix

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

You may need special recovery apps even if you can mount the drive. Try testdisk or photorec.
